Pearl didn't know why Darius had been kidnapped. She hoped it was for money because if it wasn't, it could

"Don't move," Pearl said, managing a smile. "The doctor mentioned you need to stay still to heal from your

surgery. Just rest, and you'll get better soon."

Richard nodded, his voice scratchy from just waking up. "Can | have swater?" he asked. Pearl quickly poured

him a glass and helped him drink by holding it to his lips.

Feeling a bit refreshed, Richard's voice grew stronger. "How's Darius doing?" he asked. He had been worried

about Darius even while he was unconscious.

Pearl shook her head. "He's okay, just sminor scratches. He'll be fine with sointment and rest," she

assured him.

"Where is he now?"

Pearl's pause made Richard suspect something was off.

"What's wrong? Why did you stop talking?"

"It's nothing. He's resting in the next room. Once you feel a bit better, I'll bring him to see you," Pearl replied

quickly.

"He should be asleep, it's very late now," Richard said.

"Yeah, it's past eleven now. Do you know how long you've been out today?" Pearl tried to steer the conversation

away from Darius to keep her emotions in check.

"I can't believe | caused the accident because | got distracted. | hate that Darius had to suffer because of it,"

He thought about the accident, still shaken. He had tried to protect Darius and felt terrible that his quick
